About Cultural Diversity 210 – Western Civilization
A survey course covering the thought and literature of Biblical times, Greco-Roman times, the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Enlightenment and Modern times, including accessible writing about science. Particular writings and authors may change from one to another semester, but in any one semester the same representative works from each of the above periods will be read.
The course develops an understanding of Western Civilization and Culture by study of some of its intellectual and artistic achievements and their historical contexts. It begins with the origins of Western Civilization in the ancient Near East and ends with its spread from Europe to other continents in the modern period. The primary readings in religion, science, philosophy, and literature are supported by a history that provides background and continuity.
